We All Live in a Yellow...Watermelon?

Behold the yellow watermelon. On the surface, it appears to be just like any other watermelon...except that someone has very helpfully written "yellow" on it.

Is it really yellow? By Jove, I think it is!!

Yum!

I'm not sure that it actually tastes any different from the red ones, but it does look exotic. I seem to have a vague memory of yellow watermelons of my childhood being darker green on the outside, with no visible striations on the rind...but that might just be all in my own little head.

I truly love watermelon...almost as much as I love mangoes, and that is saying a whole helluva lot, because I worship mangoes. Watermelon could probably be classified as my first love...that puppy love...the one you never forget because it first introduced you to the joy of heartbreak...wait, I think I'm getting a wee bit off track here...let's go back to the fruit, shall we? : )

To me, watermelon IS the taste of summer. I don't care that through the wonders of modern technology and NAFTA that we can get the damn things year 'round; they just don't taste as good during the cold months, even when they are fully ripened. I think it's because they are so closely associated with hot, humid lazy days...the kind where it really is a chore to even spit the seeds at your sister, but you do it anyway because it pisses her off...and the crisp sound that the melon makes when your aunt takes the biggest damn butcher knife you've ever seen and sticks it in with a solid thwunk and splits the melon into two ruby red halves that glisten with juice and shiny black seeds.

Of course, there is always the quarter that appears to have less seeds than the others, and there is a minor jockeying for who gets that piece...and there's always just as many seeds as the other pieces, because they were hidden under that deceptive first little seed-free chunk. Sigh.

The folks over at watermelon.org, the National Watermelon Promotion Board (who knew?) have a ton of information and recipes for watermelon. As we all know, watermelon is good for you, which kinda adds to the experience for me...I'm doing something healthy and good for me and I get to eat at the same time...whatta win-win situation.

Although, the recipe for breakfast lasagne gives the appearance that they might be stretching the recipe thing a bit too far...cornflakes as lasagne? Okay, upon further investigation of these "recipes," they just get weirder and weirder...a BLT that involves watermelon? Shrimp and Watermelon Napoleons? But this one has really sent me over the edge: General Tso's Watermelon.asp.

Deep-fried watermelon...I have to stop now.

I have a recipe for watermelon curry. No joke. Matira is the Indian name. I think it is divine, but Mr. Stapler thinks I am off the deep end when I make it.

Yellow watermelons do not taste (to me) like red ones. I think it's all psychological. I want that pink-flesh-goodness. You're right that it sings of summer. Made a fruit salad yesterday with watermelon, cataloup, honey dew, green grapes and a can of pineapple chunks. Joseph had been begging for it.

Neat, I will have to look for a yellow watermelon. The links did not work, so I will check then out later.

That watermelon curry sounds pretty interesting...

I have no idea why the recipe links aren't working. I triple-checked my coding, and it should work by all means...damned technology. Anyway, if you go to the watermelon.org site and click on the "Watermelon Lovers" link in the menu bar and then click Recipes, you can see the whole unholy bible of them : )

Thanks for reading!

I love, love, love your description of eating watermelon. It's the quintessential sumemr food. Yum! Now I want some. I've never had yellow watermelon, I'll have to look for one.

The recipes sound scary - I'll just take mine with a bit of salt, I think!

What is it with the salt and the melon? I *don't* want my watermelon salted, but I can eat a whole cantaloupe by myself if it's salted. I understand the savory/sweet attraction, in a way, but not with watermelon.
